Creating Cosy Corners for a Soothing Life
Enjoying an old classic in the lovely cocoon of my handmade throw—gift to self!
Creating cosy corners is one of my passions which directly contributes to a soothing life. It means that whatever might be happening, whether I am feeling happy and balanced or overwhelmed and exhausted, I always have a little spot to go to where I can recharge the batteries, be myself, be creative and be hugged by my space. The comfort and peace that such spaces offer is truly miraculous, and this post will give a few examples of very sweet and simple cosy corners that can easily be created.
Cosy Corners Ingredients
Wooden heart made by my dear brother surrounded with candles gifted by my lovely mum.
You don't need much to create a cosy corner—just bring your favourite things together in a way that is practical and comfortable for you. You can ask yourself a few simple questions: What is the purpose of this cosy corner? What will I love to do and use there? What will I need to be comfortable and relaxed? Below I will show you what I love to have in each cosy corner, but just now I can tell you that in every single one of them I keep a pair of scissors, because I am usually crafting or noticing a plant which needs some TLC. That is the one thing I notice I need wherever I am, so I have as many pairs of scissors as I have cosy corners!
The Resting Corner
I find blue deeply relaxing and made this blanket as a tribute to the sea.
Nature-inspired blankets made by yours truly, plump pillows, soothing books, dim lights and some plants to marvel at are some of my essentials in the resting corner. I spend an inordinate amount of time in this one, so it has to be just so. It is on the floor because that is easier and more comfortable for me, but anything is possible, you could even have a hammoc there!
The Reading Corner
Plants and colours always make a space feel welcoming.
One of my favourite corners, it is warm and comfortable with a very thick and colourful rug which I made to use up all my odds and ends of yarn. The afternoon sun streams right onto the rug. I often use this spot as a crafting corner too, because it is so comfortable, bright and inspiring.
The Tea Corner
A dedicated tea space is a hug for the heart.
I love everything about tea, so I decided to make a tea corner nestled by my treasured cookery books. It invites me to make the most of this very important beverage, which can stimulate, soothe, comfort and warm me up all at once! A truly magical brew. Check out the mugs with my soothing art printed on them; don't they look snazzy? They make tea time extra special, relaxing and inspiring.
The Painting Corner
Where the magic happens!
Repurposing part of the kitchen counter into a mini painting studio works very well for me and makes things comfortable and convenient. Sitting there to paint is a beautiful act of self-care and creativity which I love more each time. I love to light a special candle and to listen to a soothing audiobook while I paint.
The Nature Corner
To me, plants are always a delight for the eyes.
This is the one for plant lovers, although you can now get lots of very convincing artifical plants, so if you feel you can't look after live plants or your corner is too dark, you can still enjoy some lush greenery. Or you could try airplants, which are less demanding, and lightweight. I have a number of nature corners and they all inspire me in their unique ways. I might need to devote a full blog post to share all about them, as they are central to my soothing life!
The Office Corner
Uncluttered, functional, inspiring, and always warm .
My brain performs better when I am warm and comfortable, and I have created my office corner with that in mind: a sheepskin on the chair and one of my handmade throws keep me very toasty indeed, which helps me to focus. My desk is uncluttered and functional so that I can keep things efficient and practical. I fuel my inspiration and goals by keeping one of my seascapes very close. From my desk I see many, many plants; I so much love their company and freshness.
The Flower Corner
Welcome to my flower corner!
This is a little bonus to thank for your reading my post till the end! Even the tiniest outdoor spaces can be made cheerful and welcoming with some plant pots. This is my flower corner, and when the weather allows, I love to sit there and just look at them all. Spending time with them quietly is a big part of my soothing life. Can you spot the scissors?
